Paul* Hermansen is a luminous being that inhabits many musical worlds. Their work spans the gambit of styles from free improvisation, to jazz, folk music, dubstep, hip-hop, contemporary composition, and every sound world in between. Paul's* newest work "as live as it gets" is not only a testament to their curious nature in music creation, but also their ingenuity in the age of COVID-19.

"as live as it gets" features Paul* on all vocal and instrumental tracks, recorded in one take, on this musically expansive record. Idiosyncratic original compositions such as "Peace of Mind" feature a sprite, liberating energy that burst forth into complete freedom. Paul's* sense of freedom continues into the self-described "Collective Improvisation" and "It's a Small Small World" both of which highlight their instrumental prowess and ear for polarizing orchestrations. Paul* does a great service to the Ornette Coleman classic "Lonely Woman" performing it's haunting melody spread out between recorders of all ranges and slithering electric piano. The Carl Orff composition "Veris Leta Facies"is given a new life in Paul's* waltzing arrangement featuring their powerful voice in harmony with itself and fuzzed out guitar giving the track a psychedelic atmosphere. Paul* expands their one person choir in the final track, the driving Finnish folk song, "Yksie Kaksi Kolme Neljä" which leaves the listener with the image of a ritualistic circle dance in the middle of the snowy, Finnish tundra.
